DESCRIPTION:The Maverick Meerkat (no relation to the Maverick McCain) is r
apidly approaching. In a parallel universe\, some LoCo folks -- among them
\, Luke Faraone and Jeff Elkner -- are lobbying\, cajoling\, and fixing la
st minute issues with the Ubuntu Sugar Remix (USR) in an effort to get it
included in the official set of supported goodies. Even if it doesn't mak
e it into the official stuff\, there's a PPA where work is being done. It'
s sort of a re-envisioning / revitalizing of Edubuntu\, which has been see
ing a lot of action recently. So\, the thinking is that this month\, those
of us who walk in both worlds are proposing the OLPC Learning Club meeting in Arlington should focus on the USR\, wi
th the hopes that the LoCo gang will put in a good showing.\n\nShenanigans
will start at 1:00 and run until 4:00 at the Arlington Career Center (816 South Walter\nReed Dr
ive\, Arlington\, VA 22204). Afterwards\, we'll retire to the Lost Dog Caf
é (5876 Washington Blvd\, Arlington\, VA 22
205) for pizza\, sandwiches\, beer\, more shenanigans\, etc. (Lost Dog off
ers soy mozzarella and gluten-free crusts for those with dietary issues. A
lso\, the Lost Dog Café has rescued\, sponsored and placed hundreds of ab
andoned and unwanted animals over the past 13 years. See their "About" page for more info. As far as I know\,
the restaurant does NOT have WiFi.)\n\nPublic Transportation: I've found t
hat the simplest way to get there (other than bicycling) is to head to the
Pentagon metro and take one of the "16" buses\, which drops you at the co
rner of Columbia Pike and South Walter Reed\, about a block from the Arlin
gton Career Center (ACC). The ACC is behind the public library that faces
out onto Walter Reed.
